Vote for your Favourite Computer Games in the Golden Joystick Awards

Movies and TV shows have more award ceremonies than you can name but despite being just as popular, computer games only have two.

In the spring we see BAFTA crowning its virtual winners in a glittering bash much like the ones it holds for film and telly while October traditionally has the world’s biggest and longest-running gaming gongs… the Golden Joystick Awards.

Started in 1982, the annual ceremony is the only one voted by the public, meaning you have a real chance to reward the games you’ve played, loved and spent more time with than your friends and family.

World’s most popular videogame awards

Last year the GJs attracted a record 1.54 million votes and in 2009, it was named the World’s Most Popular Videogames Awards by Guinness World Records.

Now into its 29th year, voting has just opened for the likes of Ultimate Game, One To Watch and Best Mobile title – and boy what a massive list of blockbusters are featured in the nominees’ line-up.

The ceremony, in association with gaming PC maker Alienware, takes place on October 21. Voting stays open until October 14 at

Which game will be voted best?

So what’s in the running for those big trophies then? Well, it’s as tough as ever for the Ultimate Game of the Year category as the likes of LA Noire, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Gran Turismo 5 and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood face off in a list that features 20 top titles.

And if you’re eagerly-awaiting a new disc to run on your console then take your pick in the One To Watch category featuring the likes of Modern Warfare 3, Halo 4, Super Mario 3DS and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

GamesMaster Editor-in-Chief Robin Alway, who helped draw up the shortlists, said: “The combination of 1.5 million votes last year and an outstanding 12 months for games meant the
pressure was really on when it came to picking the shortlist for the Golden Joysticks. But while that was difficult, voting is easier than ever and we want every gamer to have their say.

“The shortlist features huge sequels living up to the hype, new IP establishing itself, and innovation and creativity wherever you look. There could be some major upsets when the winners are announced.”

Other categories this year show the growth in downloadable software, apps and social network gaming with awards for Best Free-To-Play, Best Mobile and Best Downloadable Game.

There’s even a gong now for Best Music Game with the likes of DJ Hero 2, Rock Band 3, Just Dance 2 and Michael Jackson: The Experience all hoping to bop until they top the votes.
