Rating: ★★★★☆

Design

For this year’s Jubilee celebrations, View Quest have added a trendy Union Jack version to their Retro Radio collection. The surround and handle are neatly wrapped in top quality leather which luxuriously encases the radio for a truly funky look.

Build Quality

I have to admit, when it came to build quality, I was somewhat disappointed. The plastic front felt a bit cheap and I found the controls to be surprisingly small. The back lit LCD screen display was also a little too small for my liking and at times, quite hard to read.

Features

On the positive side, it does include a fabulously neat integrated iPod dock so you can be kept entertained with all your favourite tunes. Another bonus is the battery operated option, which means, if you want to entertain your friends during a picnic, or listen to the latest news, you can now do it on the move and in style!

It’s a fully functional DAB/FM radio and is compatible with the iPhone and all the latest iPods. It has an AUX-in, 10 presets for DAB/FM and an auto scan function.

Performance

It has 2 x 10 Watt speakers which do give ample volume but don’t expect to be blown away. I was hoping to get a lot more from this radio, especially given the fairly high price tag. Although the range of dynamic sound was present, I found finer details were obstructed by a rather tinny sound.

The mid-range was pretty clear but I couldn’t help feeling that I was listening to music through some fairly cheap travel speakers. It was lacking any real bass and overall sound was a little hollow. However, having said that, I felt highs were well catered for and produced crisp notes to support the finer details.

Portability

This Jubilee Retro Radio is fairly compact making it easily portable for your day out with friends and with the 15 hour battery life,  you’ll have plenty of time to let you relax and enjoy listening al fresco.

Pros

  • Attractive design
  • iPhone, iPod dock
  • Battery life

Cons

  • Sound quality

Verdict

With it’s fairly high price tag, you may be looking for alternative portable DAB radios if you want spectacular sound reproduction. However, I couldn’t help but fall in love with the charming design this radio has to offer as well as the ability to dock my iPhone or iPod.
