Top Apps to Make the Most of the Summer Sunshine

If the weathermen are right, then apart from a few off days the rest of August could be a summer scorcher across the UK.

So with the sun shining here in Great Britain, there’s never been a better time to use technology to make the most of the soaring temperatures.

Below we’ve put together a list of the top 10 mobile phone apps to help you when the heat is on. It’s just a shame there’s no app for ensuring the good weather lasts until October.

Met Office

You can’t start enjoying your apps in the sun unless you know how hot it’s going to be and whether any cloud will ruin that garden tanning session. So what better place for up-to-the-minute temperatures, maps and data than the Met Office. Its official app can deliver information based on your GPS satellite location and continually updates with the latest from the skies.

Heinz BBQ

When the sun shines, out comes the outdoor cooker. To help you cook your meat properly, and not burn it, the sauce maestros have an app for the summer featuring a timer that counts down as the coals burn. It has different settings for different meats and there’s also a series of tasty recipes too.

Petrol Prices Pro

Whether it’s days out, trips to the sea, journeys to the airport or to visit family, one thing is for sure, you’re going to burn fuel in the car. This app will help you find the cheapest garage nearby when the tank is running on empty. Just don’t leave it too late to look one up.

8500+ Drink & Cocktail Recipes

Many people will want to enjoy a nice cool alcoholic drink when the sun beats down but why settle for the obvious choice of a beer or your usual tipple. Mix up a cocktail from this free app filled with thousands of recipes. Just remember to drink responsibly.

Pollen Forecast UK

If you suffer from hayfever then the good weather isn’t always fine with you. Sneezing, wheezing and runny eyes and nose can spoil your fun. This app – from medical brand Clarityn – brings you a daily pollen update along with a UV sun forecast so you know what allergic reaction to expect.

Great British Picnics

It might be another branded app, this time from butter giants Country Life, but this freebie download has a great spread inside of picnic advice, recipes and places to place your blanket. The best picnic spots are displayed on a map of the UK and you can let people know your favourites too.

This BlackBerry app allows you to create special effects on pictures shot with the normal BB camera. You can choose from a range of features including the look of a periscope to a vintage postcard theme. It’ll give your summer snaps a bit of pizazz and makes them perfect for sharing on Facebook and Twitter.

One of the most popular iPhone apps around, it’s another photo manipulation download. This one though uses classic cameras, lenses and flash guns to turn your run-of-the-mill pics into instant classics. You can also buy new lenses and snappers direct from the app for further customization.

Kids Song Machine HD

You’ll need something to keep the children quiet when you’re travelling out for the day and this is perfect. However, it won’t really keep them quiet in the noise sense – just occupied. Featuring a host of classic songs and ditties, you’ll find yourself singing along with them from the front seat.

Sky Go

If you have a Sky subscription, download this new app to your iPad and watch the best sport, TV and entertainment from your garden, the beach or the back of the car. It’s a replacement for the Sky Player app you might have already downloaded and if you don’t subscribe to Sky at home, you can still use the app by paying a fee each month.
