Ah Christmas! A time when families get together for dinner on December 25 then sit around the table playing board games.

Well, maybe that was Xmas 20 years back but these days, it’s all about whipping out your computer game console and battling the latest blockbuster you unwrapped on Christmas morning. Multiplayer optional!

With the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and 3DS or the Sony PSP still some of the hottest gifts around, it can be hard to decide which games you should be buying as pressies to play on them.

So from this week, we’ll be bringing you a guide to the top gaming titles you should be wrapping and packing in those Christmas stockings – starting with the biggest blockbusters for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Merry Christmas!

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – out November 8 (rated 18+)

Likely to end the Christmas period as the No1 best-selling game, this latest installment of COD goes back to current times to bring some of the most action-packed virtual scenes to your
PS3 or Xbox. It’s going to be one of the most epic adults-only adventures ever!

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary – out November 15 (rated 16+)

If you missed this Xbox 360 legend first time around, then this newly-remastered version of the first ever episode in the space age saga is a must-have. Even if you have played it before, play it again. It’s out to mark 10 amazing years of the Halo franchise and is exclusive to Xbox 360.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception – out now (rated 16+)

This one is exclusive to the PlayStation 3 and again brings cinema-like quality to gaming. Follow fortune hunter Nathan Drake as he goes off in search of the fabled Atlantis of the
Sands. Expect a great story, superb graphics and plenty of thrills and spills.

Kinect Sports: Season Two – out now (rated 3+)

The follow-up to the hit movement game, this one is perfect for Christmas Day. Get all the family together, off of the sofa, and get moving by playing sports including tennis, baseball and darts. You’ll need the Kinect accessory for the Xbox 360, which sits by your TV and let’s you wave your hands, arms, legs and body in order to control what happens on screen. Just make sure you let your Xmas dinner go down first.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations – out November 15 (rated 15+)

When the first Assassin’s Creed game came out, it was an instant hit with its free-running acrobatics and clever storyline. Now it’s the turn of student Ezio to follow in the footsteps of
mentor Altair. With top-notch graphics, epic battles and masterful moves to master, this should be yet another classic adventure.

Batman: Arkham City – out now (rated 15+)

The Caped Crusader swoops back into action to save Gotham City from villains a’plenty. The previous Batman game was a multi-award winner and this is likely to capture the same attention from superhero fans and gamers alike. It’s available for both the PS3 and Xbox 360.

WWE 12 – out November 25 (rated 12+)

Nothing beats a bit of multiplayer gaming on Christmas Day and there’s no better battle than in the wrestling ring. This revamped WWE game features all the major stars including Randy Orton, The Miz and John Cena. You can also play as a host of WWE Legends. Let’s get ready to RUMBLE!

FIFA 12 – out now (rated 3+)

It’s always a close result in the annual battle between FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer but right now, FIFA seems to be winning the fans over. All the teams, all the players, all the action, it’s just like you were on the pitch playing yourself. Only, you don’t have to wear shorts and you can sit on the sofa.

Kinect: Disneyland Adventures – out November 18 (rated 7+)

More movement fun with Xbox 360 Kinect as we enter the Magic Kingdom and meet all your favourite Disney characters including Mickey Mouse, Captain Hook and Snow White. Thanks to the Kinect camera you’ll be able to see yourself in the theme park and experience some of the attractions. It’s sure to be a massive hit with Disney fans young and old.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – out November 11 (rated 18+)

Fantasy adventures are generally best played alone and this one will prove a great escape from all the dramas of Christmas Day. With dragons, warriors and a civil war raging, you’ll be kept busy trying to find your way through this quest with every decision you make having an impact on the open-world gameplay.
