Tablet Computers Must-Have Christmas Gift

Tablet computers are the gift of choice this Christmas as new research predicts four million Brits intend on purchasing one over the festive period.

The total amount British consumers could spend on table computers such as the Apple iPad equates to £1.4 billion or £353 per computer, research from uSwitch has revealed.

The price of tablet computers is likely to increase after the VAT rise in January, which could be another incentive for many to buy one now, although a further 21 percent plan to buy one within the next year and seven percent will even make sacrifices elsewhere to ensure they are able to afford it.

One of the main reasons for choosing one brand over another when it came to tablet computers, the research found, was due to battery life, where 77 percent of respondents said it was an important factor.

67 percent on the other hand were motivated by price; 61 percent wanted a good spec and 32 percent of gadget-heads admitted to choosing a tablet because of the particular brand.

“The ‘iPad effect’ has propelled the tablet PC into the mainstream and unsurprisingly it has become the must-have gadget for consumers this Christmas,” said Ernest Doku, uSwitch mobiles expert.

“This huge interest is definitely set to continue into the New Year, so expect to see a plethora of touchscreen tablets land from major manufacturers in 2011.”

A tablet is more of a treat for many consumers, where the majority say they would use it mostly to surf the internet, despite 94 percent already owning a laptop or computer.

A further 15 percent plan on using their tablet as a means to read books or newspapers and 12 percent are looking at the entertainment value it could add to long journeys. Only 13 percent thought it would be useful for work.

Top Tablet Brands

The Galaxay Tab from Samsung is a good choice this Christmas boasting a 7 inch touchscreen and the latest Android 2.2 operating system.

Apple’s iPad is also a contender as the first to have been launched in this tablet market, with a 9.7 inch touch screen enabling it to easily fit into your bag on a day out and about.
