Super Mario Bros 2 – is it any good?

The latest Super Mario Bros is set to build on the success of the franchise and is due for release on 17 August – so is it any good?

Mario has been a stalwart of the gaming world for many years now, with his various titles delighting gamer of all ages.

Nothing is more satisfying than collecting a raft of gold coins as you speed your way through level after level, keeping your fingers crossed that you chance upon a mushroom and double in size and strength.

Super Mario Bros 2 will be available on Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL, with a number of new features that should make play even more dynamic.

New Super Mario Bros 2 – what players can expect

For the first time in the series players will have ability to collect a bumper one million coins. It sounds a little ambitious but trust us, there are a ridiculous amount of coins to be had.

Gamers will have to leap, fly and perform other maneuvers to prevent their precious hoard from being reduced to zero by arch enemies in the form of Goombas, Koopa Troopas and more.

Players can increase their ability to negotiate the rough terrain of the Mushroom Kingdom by testing out Coin Rush mode, which sees Mario completing three random courses in quick succession. These are taken from stages of the game that players have already conquered.

But while the Coin Rush gives Mario to chance to claim glory, one false step will mean that game is well and truly over.

Multiplayer Mario Bros

The graphics and features have been boosted to a level you would expect from a Mario sequel, but a new multiplayer mode sets this game apart from the rest.

There are a number of multiplayer options, with the choice of playing with or against others, with one playing as Mario and the other as his brother Luigi.

There is also the option to take on an opponent to see who can amass the most coins. Nintendo 3DS console users can then share this information via StreetPass and challenge others to a coin collecting battle.

With some cool new features and gameplay that will look great on the 3DS XL, not to mention the multiplayer mode that brings another dimension to this classic format, Mario Bros 2 is well worth buying.
