Sony Cameras and Camcorder Win Prestigious Awards

Many people interested in photography and video would have heard of the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) Awards, an association made up 30 member photo and imaging magazines from 5 continents and 15 worldwide countries.

Each year the association’s annual awards bestow accolades on manufacturers looking particularly at innovation, ergonomics, design, ease-of-use, efficiency, price/performance ratio and more.
And this year, Sony has walked away with two awards.

The first is for best imaging innovation, which has been awarded to the Sony SLT Camera range for it’s Translucent Mirror Technology.

In contrast with conventional DSLR cameras, Translucent Mirror Technology uses a fixed, translucent mirror that ‘splits’ the optical pathway between the main image sensor and a separate phase-detection autofocus sensor, enabling AF to work without interruption even during the exposure periods.

The SLT a55 and SLT a33 are Sony’s first-ever digital cameras to employ Translucent Mirror Technology.

This means that high-speed shooting with the a55 at up to 10 frames per second in Continuous Priority AE mode is possible.

The awarding panel said that Translucent Mirror Technology offers a new level of functionality.

“The advantages of a translucent, fixed mirror technology are evident in the form of real time, phase detect autofocus (also available in Movie Mode) and much increased burst mode speed.

By means of SLT design, bodies can also be made smaller, thus reducing weight and size without sacrificing functionality and advanced technology benefits,” they said.

The Sony Handycam NEX-VG10E
The Sony Handycam NEX-VG10E also picked up a prestigious accolade for the creation of the world’s first camcorder that is compatible with a number of different interchangeable lenses.

The camcorder picked up the award for Best Expert Camcorder in 2011.

The Handycam NEX-VG10E captures cinematic full HD movie and stereo sound and has a 14.2 effective megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, which is approximately 19.5 times larger than the standard sensor found in conventional camcorder.
