Electric fans haven’t changed much since they were invented in the late 1800s. Grilles have been added. Materials are different. Buttons have popped up. But the fundamental problem has remained the same. They all have blades, which chop the air before it hits you, causing an unpleasant buffeting sensation.
So, if there were no blades, there’d be no buffeting; airflow could be smooth. But how do you make a fan without blades? Dyson engineers started with pressurised air, forcing it through narrow apertures to create jets. But they needed it to be more powerful to work in a fan.
The breakthrough came when they noticed that accelerating air over a ramp amplified it by 10-20 times, drawing in surrounding air. Hundreds of iterative tests later, and a new type of fan was created.
The Dyson Air Multiplier™ fans draw in up to 33 litres of air per second at their base. This air is then accelerated through an annular aperture, creating a jet of air which passes over an airfoil-shaped ramp, channelling its direction. Surrounding air is drawn into the airflow, amplifying it by up to 18 times. The result: a steady stream of smooth air.
All Dyson Air Multiplier™ fans have been tested for the equivalent of 10 years use, and come with a two-year parts and labour guarantee.
Dust free. Like our vacuums.
No blades means there’s no need for the Dyson Air Multiplier™ fan to have a protective grille. With a simple loop it’s easy to clean.
The Dyson Air Multiplier™ fan doesn’t have fast spinning blades. It’s safe to use. There’s no need to worry about inquisitive fingers.
Easy to use
Fans with blades are only wired to run at two or three fixed settings. The Dyson Air Multiplier™ fan has a dimmer-switch control, which allows air speed to be precisely adjusted.
Conventional fans can also be top heavy, need positioning with two hands, and topple easily. Because the motor is located at the base of the Dyson Air Multiplier™ fan, it can be tilted with a touch.
For the home or office
There are currently three fans in the Dyson Air Multiplier™ range. AM01 is a 10” or 12” desk fan for personal use.
AM02 is a one metre high slender tower fan, designed to take up minimal floor space. And AM03 is a pedestal fan. Its height can be adjusted, and it offers the greatest airflow of all Dyson Air Multiplier™ fans. This makes it suitable for use in larger areas including living rooms and offices.
Both AM02 and AM03 come with a remote control to allow the user to adjust airflow and oscillation from across the room. It’s curved and magnetised to store neatly on the machine when not in use.
