SANYO Full HD Xacti FH1 camcorder

Sanyo Xacti VPC-FH1

Rating: ★★★★☆

I was looking for a camcorder to be able to captchure those special moments of my twins being born. After a lot of research I decided that that SANYO Xacti FH1 was the camcorder for the job. It was a nice size and design that I was looking for. It came within the price banding I was looking for. And it was HD.

I have been using it now for a year to take videos ranging from 30 seconds, 2 minutes, through to 20 minutes. All of them have come out great so far.
The main thing about the camcorder that I was looking for was that it could take good videos inside without looking too dark. This camcorder does a good job with that. And in daylight the HD videos look fantastic.

The photos are not fantastic and are sometimes a bit grainy, but I didn’t buy it for the photos.

The HDMI output means I can connect it direct to my HDTV and play the videos back direct, but my preference is to download the videos to my PC where I edit them together and make short little movies to go on to the babies own website. Everyone loves them :)

The camera comes nicely packaged in it’s box with the following contents:

  • Camcorder
  • CD-ROM with software
  • USB cable
  • Component cable
  • S-AV cable
  • USB adaptor
  • Battery Pack
  • AC Adaptor
  • Remote Control
  • Lens cap
  • Grip belt

The menus are clear and easy to use and I’ve setup once and not really had to change them at all.

I bought some SD Cards at the same time, 8Gb Class 6, and 16Gb Class 4. They both perform pretty much the same in respect to speed of writing the recordings to them, and of course you can store lots more Full HD video on the 16Gb.

A fully charged battery lasts around 120 minutes. Plenty of time to fill up with video footage.

I also don’t keep turning it on and off, just by closing the LCD monitor is enough to send it in to standby and not drain the battery to any noticable degree. Opening it up again brings up the spash screen before it’s ready to record again.

  • Full HD at 1080p
  • Good Zoom level
  • Performs well in low lit indoor rooms
  • Good LCD monitor

  • Photo taking not the best

I love this camcorder for what it was intended, a nice handy family camcorder that can capture those special moments in HD for you to store and keep. The photo option is nice but could have been better, but overall it performs very well and I’ve not had any issues with mine for the year I’ve been using it.
