Samsung have confirmed that ALL Galaxy S2 owners who bought their phone SIM free are at the back of the queue for the Android 4.0 upgrade but WILL get it soon!
The update was made available at the end of last month with O2 and Three contract customers given the first opportunity to upgrade.
At the time, we reported that customers on Vodafone, Orange, T-mobile and those with SIM free phones would have to wait a little bit longer. Now it seems the wait is finally over (well, almost).
Simon Stanford, VP of Samsung Telecommunications & Networks for Samsung UK, spoke with CNET UK yesterday:
“SIM-free Galaxy S II owners will get the Android ICS update once we’ve got all of the operator pieces on board”
To get the tasty Ice Cream Sandwich update, all you’ll need to do is connect to Samsung’s Kies device management software, check for updates and download.
ICS Gaining Momentum
In early March, reports surfaced that the percentage of Android devices actually running ICS was less than 1.5%. Recent stats now show that this has jumped up to 2.9%. Not exactly a wow factor but still a large improvement and with so many Galaxy S2 owners still waiting to take the upgrade, expect the percentage to keep growing.
The same report in early March concluded that the main OS running on Android devices was Gingerbread with a whopping 63%.
Android 5.0 (codename Jelly Bean) is rumoured to be launching in the next few months with the Galaxy S3 one of the first devices to be running the new OS. Asus are also reportedly keen to get on board the Jelly Bean train.
