The next-gen console from Nintendo, the Wii U, is very nearly upon us. In just a few short months, we’ll be able to get our hands the first new console in what seems like ages.
While the Wii U has faced criticism from some in the industry for not being powerful enough, there’s no doubting the innovation and forward-thinking behind the console.
With the gaming world waiting with baited breath for the next generation machines from Sony and Microsoft, some are questioning Nintendo’s timing of the release of the Wii U.
Will the Nintendo Wii U price be right?
But, according to Nintendo, it is not the timing of the release that will decide the Wii U’s fate in the market – it’s all down to the price.
Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata told gaming website Gamasutra:
“Being first in the next generation race is not important at all. The pricing of Wii U is going to be one of the most important elements when it is going to be launched.”
Nintendo Wii U release
It’s an interesting claim from the gaming boss, as the release date of a console in relation to its competition can make all the difference.
The Xbox 360, for example, had a one-year head start on the PS3 and has long been the dominant console. Of course it’s not all down to that extra year, but it certainly helped.
Then again, the original Wii was released after the Xbox 720 and was a huge success thanks to its different approach to gaming. Nintendo has again taken an innovative approach with the Wii U, but we’re in a different gaming world now.
“The environment is different. Wii U is going to be launching in a different environment than when the Wii was launched,”
Nintendo has said that the Wii U will be ‘reasonably priced’ to avoid another 3DS disaster, where the gaming giant shot itself in the foot with the price. So start saving those pennies!
