New Apple adverts are anything but Genius

Usually when you think of an Apple advertisement, you think slick, minimalistic and classy.

No company is perfect though and there have been some occasions where Apple have got it a bit wrong. The Mac Vs PC campaign for example which, can only be described as ‘smug’.

But now there’s something even more irritable. The Apple ‘Genius’.

Less than Genius

Three ads were broadcast during NBC’s coverage of the London Olympics on Friday in the US and have been met with less than complimentary reactions.

One of the more flattering reactions came from US tech website The Verge who said:

“We have no idea how these got greenlit, much less how the company decided they were worth paying for a fraction of the $1 billion NBCUniversal made in Olympics-class airtime this year.”

A headline from Digital Trends read:

“New Apple ads make Mac owners look inept, foolish.”

Ads feature an Apple ‘Genius’ employee complete with blue T-shirt and smug demeanor helping out various dim-witted Mac users complete the most complicated of tasks like dragging and dropping files and opening iMovie.

You can take a look at the ads in all their smugness below!

In the following ad (my personal favourite), our hero is woken up in the middle of the night by a frantic man who’s wife is in labour. Instead of getting her to the hospital, the man asks the ‘Genius’ to help him create a photo card to announce the birth. Hilarity ensues…

The last ad features the Genius being stopped in the street by a man claiming to have bought a laptop that’s “just like a Mac”. The smug Genius soon shows him the error of his ways…

What do you think of the new Apple adverts? Would you seek advice from an Apple Genius after watching this? Id like to think that most Mac users are capable of dragging and dropping files or creating a Photo Card without help. Isn’t that what Google’s for anyway?
