Love Music, Get Sonos…

Rating: ★★★★★

I have recently refurbished my house from top to bottom. New kitchen, bathrooms, re-plastering walls, pulling up floors etc etc. Think you got the picture.

I knew I wanted some sort of music system around the house, but house is very old and even in its gutted state, getting lots wires and ceiling speakers around the place was challenging. So I went on the hunt and what better place to do my research…. Tinternet.

I did the usual stuff and when to all the usual places that you might buy this sort of gear and most of it was either was very very expensive, needed a massive re-wire job or didn’t quite do what I wanted it to. Then I stumbled across the Sonos system.

I have to say the site did a great job of explaining, in simple terms what it did. Having viewed the cheesy American video demonstration and being a very keen Iphone user, I though this product looked perfect for what I wanted in my home.

Like all purchases of this nature, you never know if the product is going to work quite as well as the demo and I did think that being a wireless product, it might cut out a lot and be subject to a few interference issues. But none the less, I took the plunge and bought an S5 all in one for most of the rooms in the house and a ZP90 Zoneplayer to plug into my amp and surround sound in the lounge. I didn’t buy the Sonos controller, as it is in my opinion very expensive and I had an Iphone, so could control it for free.

I am not a massive techy and I was dreading setting this up. Any of you that have set up wireless products in the past and run into issues will understand my concern. But I have to say the un-boxing and setup experience was a breeze. It really is as simple as in the video. Just plug ‘em in push the two buttons on the front and Roberts your fathers brother…

Once you get all the Zones in and working, which took me all of 15 mins, you can’t wait to get it playing some music. If you want to play you own music from your Mac or PC, you have to run the Sonos software on there and sync it with your music. Depending on the size of your music library, this can take a while. Once I had done this, I downloaded the free Iphone controller for Sonos and I was away…

All I can say is WOW! The Sonos system is so easy to use. You can really play any of your music, in any room and control it all from your Iphone. It is an amazing bit of kit and it works seamlessly. You can listen to all your personal music, any of the 100s of internet stations that come pre-loaded, create your own playlists and even edit them on the hoof, just like an good old fashion juke box.

But the real jewel in the crown for me what the realisation that you can sign up to Napster’s £5 per month unlimited deal and get access via the Sonos controller to ANY of their millions of tracks. You can also use other services like Spotify and Last FM. They have had a couple of issues over Christmas with this service, but they assure me that this won’t happen again.

I have been using the Sonos system for a while now and I still love it. I have also recently bough an Ipad and Sonos now have a specific app for this to with enhanced functionality and drag and drop capability. The only issue I have ever had with it is deciding what to play.

  • Affordable
  • Access to Napster and Spotify
  • Free Iphone and Ipad apps
  • Great user interface

  • Expensive Sonos Controller - Buy an iTouch for less

Sonos really is everything that they claim it is in the video and I would recommend it to anybody. Don’t buy the controller, if you don’t have a Ipad and Iphone, then buy an Itouch it’s cheaper and nearly as good. Having said that it is a great product. It gets 5 stars from me.
