Kobo to enter tablet market with Kobo Arc

Kobo, the company best known for its e-readers, has announced that it is launching a new tablet device alongside a more compact e-reader in an attempt to take an even larger share of the market.

The move will see the company wade into the tablet wars with companies including Apple and Amazon; who are both expected to launch devices in the near future.

Kobo has confirmed that the launch date for the Kobo Arc tablet will be in November, so with a release date for the above devices as yet unconfirmed it may stand a chance of pipping them to the post.

Kobo Arc specs and features

The Kobo Arc will be powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and will boast a 7-inch high-definition display screen. The device will be available in an 8GB version (priced at $200) and a 16GB version (priced at $250).

The model will also run on Android, though there is no news as yet whether this will be Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or an older version of the OS.

If we compare this to the rumoured features for the Kindle Fire 2, which is set to boast a quad-core processor for a similar price point, it could be argued that the Kobo Arc is lagging behind in some areas before it has even hit the market.

Kobo Arc: can it compete with industry giants?

Kobo Chief Executive Mike Serbinis has said that the company will attempt to set itself apart from the competition by producing a tablet that is targeted to a specific market.

“There are players in the market – Amazon being one of them – that have Apple envy and they are going after this general purpose tablet market. We remain focused on the book lover and are really making a bet on the book lover,”

“It is certainly the road less travelled, but what we have proven having just crossed over 10 million readers across the world in a matter of 32 months is that we have a great solution for those book lovers.”

The Kobo Arc will be unveiled at an event on Thursday in Toronto, alongside an improved e-reader – let the Christmas battle commence!
