Kinect for Windows – What You Need to Know

Steve Ballmer promised it at CES last month, and now it is here. Kinect has finally arrived on Windows, and looks set to revolutionise home computing the same as it did with gaming.

Since its launch in 2010, the Kinect has sold in ways that Microsoft could only have dreamed of. It currently holds the record for the fastest selling consumer device in history.

Between November 2010 and January 2011 it sold an incredible eight million units. Not bad for a couple of months’ work.

And as Ballmer enjoyed telling us at CES last month, the Kinect has now shifted more than 18 million. So it is little wonder that Microsoft was keen to bring the technology to computers.

And we’re very glad it did. The technology in the Kinect is truly space-aged, and it’s fair to say we are only seeing the start of what it can really do.

So with that in mind, what do you need to know about this very exciting, and long-awaited, advancement in computing technology?

Improved Technology

Never one to rest on its laurels, Microsoft has boosted the Kinect’s capabilities for Windows. The Near Mode can now recognise objects as close as 40cm, rather than the 50cm on the 360 version.

We also have skeletal tracking and improved voice recognition, as well as the ability to use up to four Kinect sensors on the same computer.

Kinect for Windows Price

We haven’t actually had a confirmed UK price just yet, but it can’t be too far away. In the US, Kinect for Windows will set you back around $250, or £157.

So it’s not exactly cheap, and a fair bit pricier than the console version. But it will not be subsidised in the same way the console version is, with games and Xbox Live subscriptions.
