The nation’s favourite phone has been revealed as the iPhone 4, a new poll reveals, knocking HTC off the number one spot in April.

After struggling to stay in the nation’s top five, the iPhone 4 has moved two places to claim the number one spot for the most popular mobile phone, uSwitch’s latest tracker reveals.

Apple state their profits have risen by an impressive 95 percent to £3.7 billion in the second quarter, with over 18 million iPhones sold.

The Tracker ranks the most popular handsets based on live searches and sales.  HTC was shown to have the most handsets in the top 10 even though it was knocked off the top spot by Apple’s iPhone 4.  It’s Desire HD and original Desire came in second and third place respectively.

Android also showed its increasing strength in the market place as in April it dominated 70 percent of the charts compared to 50 percent in the previous month.

“Although the old favourites Apple and HTC are still the front runners, the battle for other spots in the top ten is on,” commented Ernest Doky, uSwitch technology expert.

“The biggest winners though are consumers.  As the handsets do battle, prices of deals are being driven down.”

The Samsung Galaxy S II climbed six places from March to fourth place making it the biggest climber – and the phone has only just been released at the beginning of May meaning its popularity was based on pre-orders in April.

However, strength in the above devices has meant Nokia phones drop out of the top 10 most popular phones in April.  Although the biggest faller was the Blackberry Torch who continued its descent falling three places.

The Top 10 mobile phones in April are as follows:

1Apple iPhone 4 (16GB)

2HTC Desire HD

3HTC Desire

4Samsung Galaxy SII

5Samsung Galaxy

6HTC Wildfire

7Blackberry Curve 8520
