iPhone 4S: What are the Alternatives?

The new iPhone 4S is undoubtedly the cool new kid on the mobile block, but if you didn’t manage to get hold of one when it launched, don’t despair, there are plenty of affordable alternatives out there designed to satiate your tech needs.

The iPhone 4S has just launched in the UK. At £499 to buy outright, it isn’t cheap. Depending on what package you opt for – and if you opt for a contract-less deal – the iPhone 4S will cost at least £499 for the 16GB model in black or white. If you want to beef up your package you will be paying £599 for a 32GB iPhone 4S, or £699 for the 64GB version.

If you love Apple and love tech you may think it’s a price worth paying, after all, how can you put a price on looking cool? But if you can’t afford the cash for the iPhone 4S, but don’t want to look like a tech-Neanderthal to all your mates, there are some good alternatives out there.

Below we take a look at some super-tech gadget bundles that you could buy for the same amount of money.

A Good One Off Alternative Buy

The Asus Eee Pad 16GB10.1″ Tablet and Keyboard Docking Station will give you many of the same functions of the iPhone 4S, and more besides.

If you are looking for a practical tablet that offers a range of entertainment options – including HDTV connectivity, as well as with easy access keyboard functionality for use as a regular laptop for typing out emails, then the Asus Eee Pad is a good value buy.

Good Phone Alternatives… with some cash left over to treat the family

If you are set on a pay as you go phone deal, but simply can’t get away with telling your partner that you’ve spent £500 on a new phone, you could take a look at many alternative mobile phones that cost far less than the iPhone 4S.

Just some good mobile phone alternative options to buy include: The HTC Wildfire S – which is available on a Pay as you Go from around £149.99. The Samsung Galaxy Europa i5500 could be a good bargain buy at £49, too. The BlackBerry Curve 8520 is also a good phone and is available from £149, or you can get your hands on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 for £399.99. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 could be an interesting buy, too.

Nintendo 3DSYou could buy any of these phones and still seem respectable in the eyes of your tech-peers, plus, you could even suggest that you opted against the new iPhone 4S, not because of price, but because you had concerns that it may not even be the best phone available to buy in the near future.

Obviously if you did opt for any of these phones – but for some reason you are still in bad books with your partner for overspending, you could put the money you would have spent on the iPhone 4S to good use by purchasing additional tech gifts for all the family.

The extra cash saved from not buying the iPhone 4S would leave you with money left over to invest in additional gadgetry that all the family can enjoy. Just some additions you could buy include a 5″ TomTom, sadly with no additional Jeremy Clarkson. Or you could get your hands on a Nintendo 3DS for just £149, or something like the Sony DVPFX730W 7″ portable DVD player for just £129.

A Great Work, Entertainment and Phone Bundle for the Same Cost as the iPhone 4S

Samsung Libre C3300 smartphoneWant a device with a 250 GB hard drive for under £250? Okay, so you can’t put it in your pocket like the iPhone 4S, but you could opt instead for the HP 210-2001 10.1″ NETBOOK. Small and lightweight the netbook is great for carrying with you to meetings, or when out and about. It gives you many similar functions to the iPhone – you can browse the Internet, access music and photos with easy options to sync up to your main PC later on. Battery life is up to 10.5 hours, too.

With the money you saved you get yourself a 4th generation iPod Touch 8GB version for just £169. You can store around 1750 songs on this device as well as benefit from many similar Apps as the iPhone 4S.

With the remaining cash you could still get yourself a good phone, too. The compact Samsung Libre C3300 touch screen, for example, can be bought for just £51 for a pay-as-you-go deal. The phone has a 2.4-inch display, takes photos with a 1.3-megapixel camera and you can tune in to FM radio. There’s also a microSD slot to increase storage of MP3 songs.

Of course, if you really, really want an iPhone 4S, but don’t want to spend the £499, you could look at the iPhone 4S tariffs for monthly contracts.
