How to add Videos to YouTube and Facebook

Most of us are familiar with watching videos on YouTube and increasingly on Facebook too, but do you know how to add your own videos to these networks? Follow these simple step-by-step instructions on how to publish your own videos online.

How to add Videos to YouTube

The Sneezing Panda, the Dramatic Chipmunk, Charlie Bit my Finger, various versions of Bruno Ganz’s epic performance as Hitler in the movie Downfall; whatever you can think of or are interested in, you can find it on YouTube.

Did you know that YouTube has only been around since February 2005? The website is a phenomenon that has transformed the way we entertain ourselves. It is by far the most popular video-sharing platform in the world with over 100 million video views per day.

Users can instantly watch, share, like, subscribe to anything from trailers, episodes and scenes, music videos, recipes, seminars –you name it!

But you can also upload your own videos, too. Home videos; do it yourself presentations; footage from gigs and plays; your favourite songs playing over your choice of photos – you can upload whatever you wish as long as it complies with service and privacy regulations.

Uploading your own video on YouTube is easy in a matter of 10 simple steps:

  1. First you need to sign up for a free YouTube membership. Without this you can’t upload videos and you can’t comment on other people’s videos either. You will be required to enter an email address (a Google Gmail Address is required – you can get one for free here), username and password, country, postal code and date of birth. All fields must be completed.
  2. Before you begin to upload anything you also need to be aware of the fact that you cannot add any videos you wish on YouTube – they need to comply with the terms of service. YouTube reserves the right to take offline anything that violates these terms, with the most common violations being copyright infringement, adult content, hate speeches and privacy invasion. The YouTube terms of service can be found here and more specific YouTube Community Guidelines can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/t/community_guidelines.
  3. Once all signed up and fully conscious of the guidelines; you can now begin the upload process. Hit the ‘Upload Videos’ icon on the right hand side.
  4. Log-in with your account details (see step 1 if you don’t have an account).
  5. You will then be asked to provide some information about the video you’re about to upload: A title, a description, tags, category and language. Using effective keywords will rank your video higher in the results page and help users find it easily. For example if you are uploading a home video guitar lesson of Stairway to Heaven be sure to include tags such as: guitar, lesson, music, chords, solo, how to play, Led Zeppelin, etc. Selecting the appropriate category is also very important.
  6. Hit the ‘Go upload a file’ button. Alternatively you can ‘Use Quick Capture’ which allows you to record a video instantly through the camera on your computer (similar to Skype – read more: How to Use Skype).
  7. The next set of questions you will be presented with concern privacy. You have two options here: to make the video public or private. The first option makes it accessible to all YouTube users, whereas the second option enables access only to the people of your choice.
  8. Unfortunately not all formats are accepted by YouTube so prior to uploading your video you may need to convert it. The supported video formats are listed on the site.
  9. YouTube will then ask you whether you comply with its terms of use, which you must read first.
  10. Now you can browse and upload your video from your hard drive. The upload speed will depend on your broadband Internet connection. Once your video has been uploaded YouTube will automatically convert it to an FLV file. This will take a few minutes and your video will be available to the world forever after (or until you decide to take it down).

How to add Videos to Facebook

Another increasingly popular platform for uploading your videos to is Facebook. This is much easier than uploading it on YouTube but it means that your intention is to just share it with friends and Facebook users, rather than with the global online community! The process is completed in 5 simple steps:

  1. Before you upload any video on Facebook you need to ensure it has been converted to a supported format. The most common formats are mov, avi and wmv. The video must also be under 1,024 MB and last less than 20 min.
  2. Sign into your Facebook home page using your account name and passwords and visit your Profile. On the top navigation bar you will find 5 tabs, one of which is Video.
  3. Hit the Video tab and choose to either Record a Video (through your webcam) or Upload A Video (from your hard drive).
  4. Hit ‘Upload’, browse your drive to locate your video and click ‘Choose’ or ‘Open’. The upload should begin. While you wait for your video to go public you can say something about it on the box provided beneath it. A title and a comment is what most people go for!
  5. A little padlock shows under the video. This regulates your security settings. Your options are to make your video visible to Everyone (all Facebook users),  Friends of  friends, Friends only, or Customize it (meaning that you select precisely who can view it). Your video is now on your wall and can stay there until you decide to take it down!
