Heavy Rain is BAFTA Big Winner

PlayStation 3 original action thriller Heavy Rain has
emerged the biggest winner at this year’s GAME British Academy Video Games
Awards.

Comedian Dara O’Briain hosted the lavish London
ceremony on Wednesday night. The self-confessed gaming geek had the audiences
in stitches with his in-jokes about last year’s virtual adventures.

But it was the Sony title that came out on top
winning three gongs for Best Original Music, Technical Innovation and Story.

It failed though to land the major award of the
night, Best Game, which went to Mass Effect 2, described by judges as a
“combined achievement of technology, art, design, audio… a beautiful complete
gaming experience”.

In a new twist at this year’s ceremony, a Social Network Game category was included in the nominations. My Empire, a Greco-Roman
building game played via Facebook, won it.

Celebrities including Himesh Patel and Charlie G.
Hawkins – Tamwar and Darren in EastEnders – Eurovision hopefuls Blue,
ex-Hollyoaks actress Gemma Atkinson and boxer Joe Calzaghe all attended to give
out the coveted BAFTA masks, normally reserved for films and TV shows.

Other main winners were Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood
in the Action category, Super Mario Galaxy 2 in Gameplay and Civilization V for
Strategy.

And in recognition of the power of app-based games
for the iPhone and iPad, this year’s handheld winner went to Cut the Rope, from
Angry Birds publisher Chillingo.

“Cut
the Rope has been nothing short of a phenomenon on the iOS platform and
we’re delighted it’s been recognised by the British Academy,” said Chris
Byatte, co-general Manager of Chillingo.

F1 2010 drove off with the Sports BAFTA while Need
For Speed: Hot Pursuit won this year’s Multiplayer award.

Peter Molyneux, creator of epic titles such as
Populous, Theme Park and the Fable series, was presented with the highest
honour the Academy can give out, the Fellowship.

Legendary actor Sir Ben Kingsley, who appears in
Fable 3, handed it over to him.

A panel of experts from gaming development,
publishing and the media judged all the winners at the BAFTA Video Games Awards.

Only one award was voted for by the general public,
the GAME Award of 2010, which was won by Call of Duty: Black Ops. More than
110,000 votes were cast.

Kinect Sports picked up the Best Family award,
beating fellow Kinect titles Adventures, Kinectimals and Dance Central.

But despite five nominations, quirky Xbox LIVE game
LIMBO failed to grab a single award, despite huge critical acclaim.

Microsoft’s Neil
Thompson said: “We’d like to congratulate our extraordinary developers and
partners on their BAFTA award nominations, particularly Rare for their win for
Kinect Sports.

“As the recent
Guinness World Records distinction has shown, millions of families and gamers
have gotten off the couch and moving, dancing and getting fit with Kinect. We
promise that there are even more controller-free games and entertainment for
all ages and interests still to come.”
