Google Nexus Tablet – what do we know so far?

If you thought last year was the year of the tablet, think again – 2012 is gearing up to be a battle to the death for tablet manufacturers.

Apple has already laid down the gauntlet, releasing its latest iPad last month. The tablet received good reviews, but whether that turns into strong sales remains to be seen.

Of course, any Apple product is going to sell pretty well. But the new iPad will have to do very well to beat the hugely successful iPad 2 last year.

There’s also plenty of competition to contend with this year. Samsung, for example, has unveiled not one but two new tablets recently, both of which look like very impressive turns.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 looks like leading the charge in the tablet market for the South Korean tech giant this year.

But it’s not just the high end where competition is going to be stiff this year, as Google is rumoured to be readying its first tablet offering – the Nexus Tablet. So what do we know about this exciting device so far?

Google Nexus Tablet image leaked

A Google tablet has been in the pipeline for a while, but now we’ve been given a (alleged) first look at what the device will actually look like.

Leaked to tech website Pocketnow, the image shows us a sleek and simple device with just a few Google brands for icons on the screen.

No other details came with the leak, although features such as a micro HDMI port, a full-sized SD card slot and a microUSB connector could be seen in the image.

Google Nexus Tablet release date

With the tablet market hotting up already, Google will be keen to get a piece of the action – so we can expect this device sooner rather than later.

Reports suggest the Nexus Tablet will be entering production this month, and could be unveiled at the company’s annual I/O conference in June.
