Google beats Facebook as most-visited US site

Tech powerhouse Google has continued its dominance of the web, as market research finds that the search engine was the most visited site in the US this year.

The results, published by market research firm Nielson, show that Google beat off competition from rivals Facebook and Yahoo to take the top spot.

The research found that there were more than 150 million unique visitors to Google branded pages each month.

Google will also be encouraged that YouTube made it into the top ten most-visited sites in the US this year, coming in fifth with just over 106 million unique visitors each month.

Facebook in second place

But fierce rival Facebook was not far behind, notching up more than 137 million unique visitors each month.

On top of this, Facebook was (unsurprisingly) the biggest social network of the year, coming first in the list of social sites and blogs.

Eclipsing all other blogs and social networks, Facebook’s visitor numbers were more than double its closest rival – the blogging site Blogger.com, which had 45 million visitors each month.

This is a Google branded site, but the search giant would have been hoping that its new social network, Google+, fared a little better.

Google+ struggling

Google’s foray in the world of social networking had a strong start when it was launched earlier this year, but has since suffered slow uptake.

Google+ came eighth in the list of top social networks and blogs with just 8 million unique visitors a month, behind sites like Twitter, LinkedIn, WordPress and even MySpace.

Other sites in the top ten most-visited in the US included Wikipedia, Apple, the AOL Media Network, and Microsoft.

Struggling Yahoo performed well, coming in third with over 130 million unique visitors per month, but analysts are warning that this may not last.

In a separate study by Comscore, young people were found to be turning away from email, using 30% less than the same time last year.
