Epson launch Moverio BT-100 – transparent 3D glasses for entertainment on-the-go

Epson has unveiled the latest in portable entertainment, with the launch of the Moverio BT-100 – a set of transparent 3D glasses for video viewing and web-browsing on-the-go.

Epson are hailing it as the hands-free alternative to smartphones, for people who are tired of watching the latest blockbusters on a 4-inch screen.

The gadget is certainly impressive. A pair of 0.52 inch LCD displays built into the headset gives the impression of watching an 80-inch screen from five metres away. And the QHD display resolution means you’ll get the big screen experience even if you’re in a confined space.

 Portable entertainment

And the transparency of the Moverio BT-100’s glasses mean you’ll be aware of your surroundings while still enjoying private content viewing. Pretty cool huh?

Not that you’ll want to wear these on the train. The large, rectangular glasses will have you looking more like Cyclops than an up-to-date technophile. Having said that, the Moverio BT-100 does have some pretty awesome features.

The glasses come with a smartphone-sized control unit that has an Android 2.2 platform with Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing for content streaming from most websites, including MPEG 4 and H.264 videos. It also comes with a 4GB SDHC card, detachable headphones, and up to 32GB of memory.

 First generation

“As a business, Epson is focused on innovation and identifying and catering for future technology trends – and we are particularly excited about the opportunities for bringing wearable see-through technology to market,” said Valerie Riffaud-Cangelosi, senior business manager at Epson Europe.

“This wearable content viewing device offers users the opportunity to watch content on the go, without being cut off from their surrounding environment. The BT-100 is the first generation of this kind of innovative conceptual product. We are committed to developing it further while delivering real customer value.”

The Epson Moverio BT-100 is out in Japan this month, and will be available worldwide from January 2012.
