Visions of an apocalyptic world have been played out in scores of titles over the years, and Darksiders II, which launched today on Xbox 360 and PS3, is the latest to capitalise on the success of the end-of-the-world format.
The lead protagonist in the game is Death himself, departing from the soldiers, ninjas and other assorted characters who gamers usually see assuming the hero role.
Darksiders II – what’s it all about?
Death is from a race known as Nephilim – among the most powerful beings in the Universe – and is joined by his trusty horse Despair and sidekick Dust, an ominous black bird with an imposing wing span that teeters between the boundaries of death and life, able to explore the Underworld at will.
Death is still reeling from the guilt of slaughtering his kinsmen in his role as the executioner, after the Charred Council condemned the Nephilim to destruction for stealing the prize of Eden, a gift bestowed to Mankind.
The game’s website had this to say:
“Though the world has been cleansed of life, there are many souls that remain between the realms of Heaven and Hell,”
“In his travels, Death will be joined by long-time companions, and will cross paths with ancient friends and foes alike. Interacting with those you meet on your journey will hold the key to unearthing the secrets behind an insidious plot for Creation itself.”
Darksiders II weapons and features
As they move through the game players can find thousands of powerful weapons, armour and amulets to make Death even more ‘deadly’ than he already is.
A range of Angel of Death armour helps to see the Underworld, and lead Death to the Gates of Hell. The range of weapons includes an enchanted axe that allows Death to perform a spinning attack that affects all nearby enemies.
Coming face to face with Death is a scary prospect for us all, but at least in Darksiders II we know it’s all just a game; albeit an incredibly thrilling one.
