Customisable Sony Xperia U smartphone available for purchase in the UK

Japanese technology giant Sony yesterday released the Sony Xperia U for UK customers, the latest Android smartphone in it’s new NXT arsenal.

This new smartphone may be the smallest of the collection which also includes the Xperia S and Xperia P but still packs a respectable 3.5″ touchscreen, 512MB RAM, a 1GHz processor, 5MP rear facing camera and Android 2.3 Gingerbread (with the promise of Android 4.0 ICE on the horizon).

Customise your kit

An interesting road Sony have gone down is the option to allow owners to customise their phone. An approach pioneered by Nokia back in the day with the 5110 handset where users were able to swap out the entire front face for new ones.

On their blog, Sony state that they have partnered with:

“leading accessory brands to enable true personalisation of your Xperia smartphones”

“As you know, design, hardware as well software, is a key part of the Xperia smartphone and Smart accessory creation and development process”

Owners will be able to purchase different coloured ‘caps’ which fit onto the phone’s base. The caps won’t be made by Sony directly so prices might not be as much as you’d expect. It’s not Apple after all!

The Xperia U is available from most UK operators at around £15 a month on a base contract.
