Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 set to break records

Newly launched Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is set to break sales records set by its predecessor, Black Ops.

The official launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 took place at the GAME store on Oxford Street, London, last night. The buzz around the game, helped by the tantalising trailer released a month ago, had people queuing from as early as Sunday to get their hands on it.

Modern Warfare 3 is available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and Windows PCs. There’s no word yet whether MW3 will make it on to the Apple Mac – The original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is available from the Mac app store, but there’s no sign of the sequel.

Modern Warfare 3 has already become Amazon’s most pre-ordered game of all time. The online retailer took 32% more orders for the game than last year’s Black Ops, the previous record-holder.

There were launch parties at over 13,000 retailers around the world, as Activision encouraged gamers to be the first to pull the trigger. Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing Inc., said: “This watershed launch extends the legacy of the franchise like no other previous release.”

One-day sales are expected to outstrip any previous records, with industry analysts expecting six million sales worldwide. Arvind Bhatia, an industry analyst, told website IndustryGamers:

“We expect MW3 to grow 10% versus last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, which has sold more than 25 million units to date. We expect six million unit sales of MW3 on day one and nearly 18 million units in the December quarter.”

If these targets are met, Call of Duty will have sold more copies in a day than its main competition, Battlefield 3, managed to sell in a week.
