BlackBerry PlayBook Coming Soon

Research In Motion (RIM) have announced that the new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet PC will be available in the US and Canada from 19th April. Will it be able to take on the market dominance of Apple’s iPad?

Already praised for its HD multi-tasking and powerhouse web experience, the Blackberry PlayBook has a 7 inch high resolution display and even supports Adobe Flash, which Apple’s iPad – including the iPad 2, currently do not.

The new PlayBook portable device runs on the BlackBerry Tablet OS as opposed to the BBOS6 which is currently used on their smartphones.

The touch sensitive LCD screen makes multi-tasking easier and is surrounded by a wide black bezel which if touched will bring up the menu. Flash 10.1 and HTML are supported on this tablet as well as HD video playback.

The Blackberry PlayBook: The Details

The Blackberry PlayBook has rear and front cameras and stereo speakers and microphones, which are perfect for capturing and creating video.RIM CEO Michael Lazaridis is calling it the ‘world’s first professional tablet’.Available in three models with 16 GB, 32 GB and 64GB, the new PlayBook also has dual core Marvell SoC at 1.2GHz, 1GB RAM.

The BlackBerry PlayBook has Wi-Fi and bluetooth connections, which if you happen to have a BlackBerry smartphone is great. The PlayBook can pair with BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software v5 or higher so you can wirelessly connect to your BlackBerry smartphone to access information like email, your calendar and the address book.

You can also use your BlackBerry phone as a modem for 3G network access on the tablet. The PlayBook does not, however, at the moment support 3G, but no doubt that will be in development shortly for future models.

There is no news on UK price and release dates as of yet for the UK. But watch this space.
