BlackBerry PlayBook 2: enough to save BlackBerry?

Research in Motion, the manufacturer of BlackBerry, had a pretty tough time of it last year with drops in sales and drops in signal.

Even in the business market, once BlackBerry’s playground, Android is starting to become the OS of choice, thanks to some great phones running the operating system.

But BlackBerry is not done yet, and has a couple of tricks up its sleeve for the coming year in the form of a new tablet and a new smartphone or two.

Rumoured for a September release, the first BlackBerry 10 device will be RIM’s answer to the likes of the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3.

But with that still quite a long way off, let’s look to BlackBerry’s next tablet offering – the BlackBerry PlayBook 2. Will it be enough to save the BlackBerry brand?

If some rumours are to be believed, we could get not one but two new PlayBooks this year, with a larger ten inch version released in December this year.

But before that, we could be seeing the PlayBook 2 as early as the Mobile World Congress at the end of February. If this is the case, we could see it in the shops before the summer.

So what can we expect from the next PlayBook? Rumours have suggested we will see a speedy 1.5GHz dual-core processor under the bonnet, which will rival the other tablets due for launch at MWC this year.

No word yet on what sort of display it will be packing, but given the first PlayBook had a nice 1024 x 600 LCD screen; we should get something pretty impressive.

Enough to save BlackBerry?

BlackBerry is by no means dead, but it is in danger of being left behind. And while the new PlayBook will certainly be impressive, so will every tablet at MWC this year.
