BBC iPlayer Launches on the Xbox 360 from Today

Finally Xbox Live members will be able to start watching BBC iPlayer through their Xbox 360 consoles.

It feels like we have been waiting for BBC iPlayer to land on the Xbox forever – although in reality it has been 3 years since initial discussions between Microsoft and the BBC.

The collaboration between the 2 giants was announced last October amidst much anticipation and it has now been confirmed that Xbox will be rolling out BBC’s iPlayer service to Xbox Live members during the next week.

BBC iPlayer Xbox Makeover

The BBC iPlayer service will be available for free for Xbox live members and even offers some enhanced functionality meaning that those with a Kinect will even be able to control iPlayer using hand signals and voice controls. (I can see this being an entertaining battle in my household with me shouting at the Kinect to play “Don’t Tell the Bride” and my other half shouting at the Kinect to play Top Gear)

iPlayer Content Available to the Masses

iPlayer will initially launch on the Xbox with just television programmes but radio is expected to be added as part of an update later in the year.  The iPlayer launch on the Xbox forms part of the BBC’s plan to extend the hugely popular catch up TV service to the masses and to enable audiences to watch their chosen BBC programmes on a wide range of devices.

The long awaited Xbox access to iPlayer now means that the BBC’s catch up TV service will now be avilable on all major gaming platforms in the UK and in total will be available on hundreds of platforms including Virgin Media, Freesat, Freeview, Sony PlayStation, Nintendo Wii as well as a whole host of mobile phones and internet enabled Smart TVs as well as a launch on Sky planned for later this year.

Daniel Danker – BBC’s General Manager for Programmes & On Demand said: “Xbox is hugely successful in the UK. Given
the BBC’s goal to reach its entire audience, I’m particularly excited that the
BBC will be bringing iPlayer to all Xbox users at no extra cost as part of Xbox
LIVE’s free membership.”

BBC iPlayer Programmes

So whether it’s Doctor Who, Eastenders, Masterchef, Panorama or Cbeebies that you or your family just can’t bear to miss… they will all be coming to an Xbox Live account in your living room very soon.  You can even sometimes catch up on whole series if you missed the boat the first time round and want to find out what all the fuss is about. Series such as Upstairs Downstairs, The Tube, Pramface or Empire allow you to catch up from episode 1 so you can join in the gossip around the water cooler.
