BAFTA Video Games Awards nominees announced

You may think they only give out prizes for movies and telly shows but the British Academy of Film and Television Arts – BAFTA to you and me – also reward video
games.

The prestigious gongs will be given out next month in London at a ceremony hosted by comedian Dara O’Briain.

And the list of those games in the running for the coveted GAME British Academy Video Games Awards reads like a who’s who of the best virtual action, adventure, sport, sci-fi and plain old fun.

Ubisoft’s hit Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood leads the list of nominations with seven, including Best Game, Action and Gameplay.

It is followed by controversial shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops and PlayStation 3 epic Heavy Rain, which each have six nominations. Please note that the video below may contain content innappropriate for children.

Mass Effect 2 has five while Nintendo Wii epic Super Mario Galaxy 2 has four, as does LIMBO, an innovative puzzle platform title, available via Xbox LIVE.

This year there is also a social network category to reward those time-wasting games we play when logged into the likes of Facebook.

The line-up for that sees Bejeweled Blitz, Farmerama, FIFA Superstars, My Empire, Zoo Mumba, and Zuma Blitz all battling it out.

The awards cover all the consoles, Sony PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, Sony PSP and the PC.

Amanda Berry OBE, Chief Executive of BAFTA, said: “BAFTA’s remit is to support and reward creative endeavours across the visual arts.

“The video games industry has and continues to make an extraordinary contribution in this arena.

“Therefore, it is only right that the Academy highlight this creative work in the same way as it does for film and television.”

Public Vote

But while most of the categories will be chosen by juries, made up of people from within the gaming industry, there is one award that those who buy games can vote for.

The GAME award sees 10 massive gaming heavyweights all vying for the trophy. They are:

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • Dance Central
  • FIFA 11
  • Halo: Reach
  • Heavy Rain
  • LIMBO
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Need for Speed: HotPursuit
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2

You can cast your vote for the one that’s your favourite at baftagameaward.com

Other titles in the running for awards include Alan Wake, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, God of War III, Halo: Reach, FIFA 11, Fallout: New Vegas, Cut The Rope, Gran Turismo 5, DJ Hero 2 and F1 2010.

All together, there are 44 different games nominated, proving what a strong year the past 12 months have been for gaming.

And looking to the future, the BAFTA Ones To Watch Award aims to reward up-coming developers and is given out in association with Dare to be Digital. This year’s nominees are Mush, Sculpty and Twang.

To even be nominated for a BAFTA Video Games Awards is a big reward in itself. To make the list dozens of games were whittled down by industry experts.
