Games company Rovio has announced that it will be launching the sequel to the ever-popular Angry Birds on September 27th.
Bad Piggies will initially be available on iOS, Android and Mac, while a version from Windows Phone, Windows 8 and PC is coming soon, according the game’s maker.
The follow-up to Angry Birds marks “the launch of a new franchise”, signalling that this is just the start of things to come for the Bad Piggies. Several variants on the Angry Birds format have been released since the game’s launch three years ago, including Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Space, and Rovio could take a similar route with Bad Piggies.
Bad Piggies: What can we expect?
Bad Piggies is expected to turn the Angry Birds format on its head. Instead of the Angry Birds getting to execute revenge on the pigs who brazenly stole their eggs, using a range of special powers to destroy the pigs’ fortresses, the pigs will have the opportunity protect what they feel is rightfully theirs.
Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio, said today:
“There’s a lot of empathy towards the lovable enemies from the Angry Birds games, and we’ve been constantly asked: what about the pigs’ side of the story?”
“Bad Piggies gives you the chance to play as the second-most-loved characters in the Angry Birds universe, and explore this rich world through their green eyes.”
Bad Piggies: Will it match the success of Angry Birds?
Angry Birds has been downloaded more than one billion times on a variety of platforms, and the brand has even expanded to toys and theme parks.
Bad Piggies is likely to build on this success, and with Petri Järvilehto, executive vice president of Rovio Games, hinting that the title will give gamers an even greater insight into “what’s going on in the imaginative and ingenious minds of the pigs”, anticipation surrounding the game’s launch is likely to reach fever pitch.
