The launch of the much-anticipated next-generation iPhone 5 could be closer than expected, with the news that Apple has fired off an email inviting selected journalists to an event on Wednesday September 12.

While the date of the above event has been circulating in techie circles for weeks, the fact that the technology giant included the line “it’s almost here” in its email message could be the first concrete clue that the iPhone 5 could be hitting the market this year.

The email is also said to feature a figure 12 with a shadow that appears to be the number 5 – adding further fuel to the idea that the event will be a showcase for the iPhone 5.

The invite also pre-empted today’s announcement (September 5th) by Nokia and Microsoft in New York, which is expected to reveal details of a two new phones running on Microsoft’s Windows operating system. It could be argued that this is an attempt to keep the iPhone 5 in the forefront of smartphone users’ minds.

iPhone 5: Headed for success?

Although it is around a year since the launch of the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5 it set to continue the success of the brand. FBR Capital analyst Craig Berger forecasts that the device could sell 250 million units over the course of its lifespan, the device’s course is already set for success.

With Apple’s success in the intellectual properties trial against Samsung, the iPhone 5 will no doubt help to keep the spotlight on Apple for months to come.
