Apple OS X Mountain Lion – Is it any good?

Another update to the Mountain Lion operating system has been announced by Apple, with the latest OS released today.

This latest update is set to continue a pattern of introducing features from the firm’s mobile devices on to its desktops and laptops. Announced at the company’s third quarter earnings release the, OS could help to boost Mac sales beyond the 2% increase recorded over the year.

Mountain Lion boost for Apple

However, Brian Blau, research director at tech research firm Gartner, argues that the latest system upgrade may have less of an impact compared to others that have gone before it.

“While there are a lot of new features this is not a major upgrade like the last version Lion was. But Apple has also been improving its Office-like software and creation applications along the way, so maybe it didn’t need such a big revision. And you have to bear in mind it is only charging $20 [£13.99 in UK] for the change.”

Apple OS X Mountain Lion: what’s on offer?

The new OS will simultaneously synchronise a number of documents with contacts, e-mail, calendars, Messages and FaceTime. The “Find My Mac” feature gives users the ability to track their computers in eventualities such as theft.

The system’s Messages service enables the sending of videos and photos to other Macs or iOS devices, without a charge to users.

iChat will be replaced by Messages on the new operating system but it will still support Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, Jabber and AIM.

In terms of social media, Twitter users will be able to tweet via Safari, Quick Look, Photo Booth, Preview and via limited apps from other providers.

Apple claims that OS X Mountain Lion is “the world’s most advanced desktop operating system”, and at £13.99 for the upgrade it would be almost foolish not to get.
