Rumours have been circulating about the launch of Apple’s 7.85-inch tablet, the Apple iPad Mini, for some time now, but with nothing concrete from Apple.
Speculation is rife that Apple will now showcase the iPad Mini at an event on October 17, with the tablet expected to hit shelves just two weeks later.
The date of the launch and the existence of the device is said to have been confirmed by a “major Apple investor”, according to Forbes, who heard about the forthcoming tablet from multiple sources.
As with any Apple rumour, we’ll be taking this one with a pinch of salt. But the speculation is rifer than ever, so what do we know so far?
iPad Mini specs and features
Details about the iPad Mini have been rather thin on the ground, but that has never stopped the rumour-mongers before.
According to reports, the device will feature 3G capability and come in at around £200, pitting it against devices such as Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD and Google’s Nexus 7, which both come with a price tag of around £159.
As Apple has recently launched iOS 6, the latest operating system is likely to feature on the iPad Mini. iOS 6 boasts 200 new features including an improved Siri, Shared Photo Streams and Apple designed-Maps.
The device is also set to feature Sharp’s IZGO displays with an impressive 330ppi density as well as dual cameras for FaceTime.
This will allow users to both snap pictures with the rear camera and engage in video chats with the front camera. We can also expect 16GB of onboard storage and a dual-core processor.
iPad Mini sales set to go through the roof
Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray has predicted that sales of the iPad Mini could hit between 4 and 6 million by the end of the year.
If the launch of the iPhone 5 is anything to go by, queues may already start gathering at retailers for the iPad Mini – if it ever sees the light of day that is!
