Apple iPad 3 vs Amazon Kindle Fire 2

One of them is a top-of-the-range tablet that is set to blow the competition out of the water; the other is a budget tablet at the opposite end of the price spectrum.

We’re talking of course, about the next tablet offerings from Apple and Amazon – the iPad 3 and Kindle Fire 2.

OK, so we haven’t even had the first Kindle Fire in the UK yet. But that’s the way the tech world operates, we’re always looking ahead.

And it looks as though Amazon is too. Having enjoyed tremendous success in the States with the Kindle Fire, Amazon is keen to get the ball rolling on a follow-up.

And Apple is also in the process of gearing up to unleash its next device, with a rumoured iPad 3 release date of 7th March.

We’ve had little in the way of detail from both Amazon and Apple, but as ever there has been speculation aplenty. So how do the two devices measure up?

> Apple iPad 3

From what we can tell, Apple is going all-out with the iPad 3. It was always going to be better than the iPad 2 (we’d be pretty disappointed if it wasn’t), but the iPad 3 is set to be a completely new breed.

We’re expecting to see a display resolution of double the iPad 2, at 2048 x 1536, and a quad-core processor – although this may be a dual-core model instead.

The latest leaked images suggest that we’ll see an impressive 8MP camera in the iPad 3 – the same as is found in the iPhone 4S.

> Amazon Kindle Fire 2

In pure specs terms, the Kindle Fire 2 is never going to beat the iPad 3. But if Amazon heeds users’ complaints about the original Fire and makes improvements, more people could be tempted.

So expect to see things like 3G connectivity, a larger and higher-res display, and an improved CPU. There have been reports of a quad-core processor going into the Kindle Fire 2, but this is pretty unlikely – Amazon will want to keep the price down.

With an expected release date of spring for the Kindle Fire 2, the two devices could be going head-to-head. So watch out Apple!
