Angry Birds, Facebook, Sky… winners at the Appys

The Baftas of the app world took place recently, at a star-studded event in London that saw some of the biggest names in the mobile world take home the top prizes.

The Appys started out last year, but the awards ceremony is building more and more prestige as time goes on.

There are 12 categories at the Appys, including best social app, best game, best news app and best overall app, amongst others.

The nominations are picked by staff at the Carphone Warehouse (which organises the ceremony), and the winners are decided by the general public.

A judging panel of some tech experts create a shortlist of nominations, and this year more than 115,000 votes were cast to crown the winners.

It may only be in its second year, but the Appys is still a useful marketing boost that no company is going to turn down.

But we’re not sure this year’s winners really needed much help getting their name out there – they are some of the biggest app titles in the world. So who emerged victorious this year?

Best game – Angry Birds

There were no prizes for guessing which title would walk away with the best game award. The winner from last year’s event, Angry Birds managed to retain its Appys title.

“Angry Birds shows no signs of running out of steam. Constantly creative, endlessly addictive, it remains unrivalled as the most popular gaming app to-date,” said Dave Masters, one of the Appys judges.

Best social app – Facebook

Another winner from last year, Facebook once again walked away with the best social app award – beating the likes of Twitter.

The social network is on the cusp of reaching one billion users this year, many of whom will also use the Facebook app.

Best app 2012 – Sky Sports News

A fantastic app, although we’re not sure everyone would agree that the Sky Sports News app has been the best of the past year.

But there’s no denying its up-to-the-minute information, in a sleek and stylish, not to mention easy-to-use, design.
