Amazon’s Kindle Fire Comes to the UK – Here’s What You Need to Know

It has been a long and frustrating wait for tech lovers here in the UK, but the Kindle Fire is finally making its way to these shores.

We Brits have had to sit and wait while our friends across the pond enjoy the low-cost tablet from Amazon, which was released in the US last year. But our time has finally come.

Not only will we finally be able to get our hands on the hugely popular Fire, but the specs of the device have been boosted and there are even two new HD models available.

The new devices were announced at an Amazon event in California on Thursday, along with a new dedicated e-reader. So what do you need to know about the latest Fire models?

Amazon Kindle Fire HD

The original Fire went down a storm in the US upon its release at the end of last year, but Amazon still has a way to go to topple Apple’s monopoly.

That’s where the Kindle Fire HD comes in, with an improved screen resolution of 1280 x 800 – compared to the original’s 1024 x 600. Add to this an HD camera, dual-speaker Dolby sound and a respectable dual-core processor and you’ve got quite a package.

Amazon has launched two versions of the Fire HD, a 7-inch (17.8cm) model and an 8.9-inch (22.6cm) model. Only the 7-inch version will go on sale in the UK to begin with, priced at £159 or £199 for 16GB and 32GB respectively and looks set to go head-to-head with the hugely successful Google Nexus 7 which is also priced at £159. Decisions decisions…

The 8-inch Kindle Fire HD model will go on sale in America from November and will also feature a 4G version.

Improved Amazon Kindle Fire

If you’re not too concerned with screen resolutions, an upgraded version of the original Fire will also be available in the UK for the low price of £129.

This is a drop from the original asking price of around $200, making it almost worth the wait. Not only that, but Amazon has boosted the specs of the Fire as well.

The battery life has been boosted for the new Fire, and more RAM improves the speed and performance of the device. Both this and the Kindle Fire HD will be available for delivery from October 25th.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

It wasn’t just low-cost tablets on display at the Amazon event last night; we also got a look at the firm’s latest dedicated e-reader.

The Kindle Paperwhite, which will initially only be available in the US, boasts sharper text and crisper images thanks to a high-res illuminated touchscreen with 25% better contrast. Perfect for reading in the dark.

While the UK has to wait for the Paperwhite, we will be getting a slightly upgraded version of the existing Kindle for a reduced price of £69.
