A buyer’s Guide to Games Consoles

Choosing your home entertainment is a big decision, and with so many great games consoles on the market, how do you decide which is the right one for you?

We’ve put together a guide to help walk you through the benefits of each console and help you pick the one that best suits your needs.

Family gaming

If you’re buying your console for the whole family to play on, or for your children to use, it’s worth thinking about how old your children are. All consoles have games suitable for all age groups, but some of the biggest and best games on the Playstation 3 (PS3) or Xbox 360 are deliberately aimed at an older audience and carry 15 or 18 certificate warnings similar to films.

The Nintendo Wii was designed with family and group gaming in mind. Most games are designed to be fun and the on screen graphics are in a cartoon style. They can be picked up and played for as long or short a period of time without the need for in-depth gaming.

The motion plus technology means everyone playing really plays the games, swinging the controller to hit a tennis ball or simulating ten pin bowling to throw the ball. The actions for game titles such as Mario Cart, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games and Guitar Hero creates fun for all.

The Nintendo Wii allows you to use the BBC iPlayer on your TV, and play against your friends on-line. It also allows access to the web via its internet “channel”.

Individual gaming, playing on-line and watching Blu-Ray

While also having family fun games, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 also offer a wide range of more adult games, with titles like Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty, you can really enjoy more intense games that need a lot of hours dedicated play to master.

Most of the new games created for both consoles are with high definition graphics, so visually the games are stunning. They are less cartoon like and some of the real life action is so impressive, it almost looks real.

Both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 offer on-line gaming communities where you can play your favourite games against other players around the world.

The Xbox360 has the most developed on-line community, and if you’re looking for the most intense in-depth and “hard Core” games, the Xbox 360 is probably what you’re looking for.

Perhaps the best reason to choose a Playstation 3 over the Xbox 360 though is the built in Blu-Ray player. Because the PS3 is connected to the web, the Blu-Ray player software is automatically updated, so it will be able to play any future discs on the market, no matter how advanced they become.

In Summary

IF you are looking for quick fun family gaming, the Nintendo Wii is the console for you. Both the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 offer more adult games with stunning high Definition graphics. The Xbox 360 has a huge range of very in-depth games and a really extensive on-line gaming community, while the PS3 also offers strong on-line gaming, but also gives you an impressive Blu-Ray player as part of the deal.
